Focus On Promoting--Not Selling

There was a very interesting article several weeks ago on another site that has created a substantially different outlook for me with regards to my art business.  The article stressed embracing a "promo lifestyle" as opposed to focusing on the number of sales.  I believe it is very easy to wrap up one's self-worth as an artist based on selling, and in today's economy it is certainly not a road to travel down.  It is also easy to get caught up in selling as motivation for creating art.  In small doses, selling should certainly be a part of this motivation, but not at the expense of enjoying one's craft.  Art should feed the soul--not drain or smoother it--and so I am stepping back, taking a breath...becoming more mindful of what I am creating and why I am creating, and focusing on making my art promotion simply a part of my lifestyle.  If I change the focus in my mind from selling to promoting, it is much more rewarding and self-sustaining.  It becomes part of a natural cycle--not a race with a beginning and end.  And that is a choice I am happy to embrace.
