Art Painting In Progress: Zoo Art For Nursery

by Catherine Jeltes in Inside My Artwork

Much of my time recently has been spent working on this charming painting series of zoo animals for a client’s nursery.  When completed, it will be a triptych (three paintings), two measuring 10″ x 10″ and the other measuring 10″ x 20″.

The first painting of the set is a baby hippo.  Because this is art for a nursery, I used bright complimentary hues of blue, orange, and yellow.  The model, of course, was my black and white photography, Baby Hippo.

The second painting in the series is a baby rhino.  Here it is sketched out, ready for the easel.

I never add much detail in my sketches as I prefer to improvise with color and loose brushstrokes during the painting process.  Keeping with the colorful nursery theme, I have since added a yellow green background.  The rhino calf will be rendered in shades of turquoise, perhaps with accents of yellow and orange to compliment the hippo.

The 10″ x 20″ painting will be hung in a portrait presentation.  Any guesses?  That’s right–a baby giraffe will present in the final painting of this nursery series.  Stay tuned for the finished triptych.
